As a no-kill animal shelter, the Central Texas SPCA always has a waiting list of guardians wishing to surrender their pets for adoption or people that have found stray cats and dogs they would like to place with us rather than take them to animal control, or an "open-door" (kill) humane society/shelter.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE ADDING A PET TO THE WAITING LIST:
-
Adding your pet to our waiting list does not guarantee placement at our shelter.
-
The fee for surrendering each pet is $45. The CTSPCA depends on the surrender fee to offset the costs associated with the daily needs, veterinarian exams, vaccinations, and spay/neuter (if not already altered) while the animal is in our care. This fee is mandatory, not tax-deductible and will be collected when the animal is placed at our shelter.
-
Pets are not received on a first-come-first-served basis since other avenues of intake, such as rescues from local kill shelters, play a role in the space availability of our kennels.
- To remain on the waiting list you MUST remember to resubmit your information every 30 days. Your entry will automatically be removed after 30 days if not resubmitted. Please understand that due to the slow adoption rates on larger dogs (over 40 pounds) and adult cats, the wait could be months.
- Animals adopted from the Central Texas SPCA shall not be abandoned, sold or given to any individual or organization that does not care for animals in a humane manner. Please contact the Central Texas SPCA before surrendering your pet to any organization that does not share the Central Texas SPCA No-Kill mission. In most instances, the Central Texas SPCA will assist you with the safe return of your pet to our care. If you are having behavioral, medical or other issues with the pet, please contact the Central Texas SPCA and specify the problem as we are willing to assist you and may be able to provide guidance or additional resources. If you are unable to keep or provide humane care for the adopted pet, the animal may be returned to the Central Texas SPCA within one (1) year from the date of adoption upon the adopter providing reasonable advance notice to the Central Texas SPCA. Any pet adopted from the Central Texas SPCA whose adopter wants to return after one (1) year from the date of adoption shall be placed on the Central Texas SPCA’s priority wait list for space permitting return of the pet to the shelter, upon the adopter providing at least fourteen (14) days' advanced notice and upon the adopter receiving written acceptance from the Shelter Managerthat space is available. If requested by the adopter, the adoption fee for a returned pet within two (2) weeks from the adoption date may be refunded.
- We strongly encourage guardians relinquishing pets because of behavioral issues to seek counseling and/or training before placing the companion animal on our wait list. A little commitment on your part to work with your pet and educate yourself on it's behavior could result in keeping it a part of your family! Contact us at 512-260-7722 during visiting hours if we can help get you started or provide you with some new ideas.
- If you are trying to place a stray or must release your family companion, we recommend that you place your pet on as many no-kill and rescue group waiting lists as possible to increase your chance of finding available space. By visiting the Useful Links page on our website, you will find links to other shelters that may be able to assist you. You may also call us at 512-260-7722 during visiting hours and we will be happy to provide you with a list of other no-kill shelters and rescue groups in your area, along with valuable tips on how to screen and adopt your pet from home.
